๐ People & Body Emojis
People, gestures, professions, families, and body parts. It is the largest category once skin tone modifiers are counted, and the one where cultural meaning varies most.
Gestures that do not travel
Several hand emoji are offensive outside their home context. ๐ is an insult in parts of the Middle East and West Africa. โ๏ธ palm-inward is a serious insult in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand โ the emoji is drawn palm-outward everywhere, which avoids it. ๐ as a raised open palm is the moutza in Greece. ๐ค is obscene in Vietnam. Worth knowing before using them with an international audience.
Skin tones
Most person and hand emoji support five Fitzpatrick skin tone modifiers: light, medium-light, medium, medium-dark, and dark. Each variant is a separate Unicode sequence โ the base emoji plus a modifier character โ so it copies as one unit and renders correctly anywhere the base emoji does. Every variant is listed on the individual emoji pages linked above.
